Breast Implants

Breast augmentation is more correctly known as augmentation mammoplasty. It is a surgical process that increases both the size and shape of a woman’s breast. There may be several reasons for the procedure to be undertaken:

  1. to develop breast shape for personal reasons.
  2. to enlarge breasts which are perceived to be too small.
  3. to correct any reduction in breast size following breastfeeding.
  4. to reconstruct breasts following surgery for disease.

The operation can enhance your appearance and boost your confidence, but it may not change the way you look to match an idealistic image, or affect the way others interact with you. Before you embark on surgery, it is advisable to carefully consider what you hope to achieve from the procedure, and discuss these thoughts with your surgeon.

There are two types of breast implant – either a silicone shell filled with silicone gel, or a silicone shell filled with saline (a saltwater solution).

  1. No lifting or bending or exercise for at least 2 weeks
  2. Wear a sports bra or surgical bra for 4-6 weeks.
  3. No strenuous exercise (gym or contact sports) for at least 6 weeks

What risks and complications are there?

  1. Haematoma (bleeding)
  2. Fluid formation around the implants
  3. Wound infection
  4. Numbness (rarely permanent)
  5. Asymmetry
  6. Swelling and bruising
  7. Implant rupture (saline)
  8. Scarring
  9. Capsule contracture
  10. Subjective dissatisfaction
